Connected Services Expired

My Connected Services expired after 1 year of ownership. I expected to not have remote start, vehicle health etc - all good. Now I only see an error screen. No radio info or navigation. I must be missing something. Sure I can use my phone. The 10 year old car I got rid of still had a good navi and remote start on the key fob. Really Toyota?

Please keep us updated. My understanding has always been that I can let Connected Services expire but I would still have Spotify and Google maps and of course the basic features like radio and Toyota Nav. What does your error screen say?

I found this on a Tundra forum which does say you lose Navi:

You would just lose the drive connect (Toyota navi) and remote connect (mobile app services) neither of which mention over the air updates. Since you can still connect your truck to WiFi I suspect you should be able to get over the air updates that way.
And this on a Reddit forum which also indcates we lose Toyota Nav:
But since I didn’t renew I can no longer use the built in GPS for navigation but CarPlay is superior imo anyway.

I think we all understand that our phone features (google map, spotify etc) will continue to work on Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. But if I forget my phone I expect my Toyota maps and FM radio to work? Yes I understand the maps may not get routine updates without Toyota Connect. And of course satellite radio is dependent on subscription.

There must be a number of people for whom Connected Services have expired. Is anyone else SOL like @abyen indicates?

The screen always defaults to this when a phone is not connected. Annoying. Sure most people have phones with data plans which can run the navigation and music via Android Auto or Apple Carplay. In my opinion, Navi should be a basic stand alone feature. It appears other manufactures are doing the same. What's next, subscription keyless entry? Yes AM and FM radio still work.

Thanks for that. When I have a phone with me, the car does automatically connect to Carplay most of the time. Without my phone, you can get out of the subscription screen by pressing one of the buttons. No navigation though. I am certain the salesman told me I would still have Toyota navigation after a year.

I just got notified through the Toyota app that my Drive Connect and Remote Connect were expiring in 2 weeks. It wasn't a surprise as my salesperson was clear about them being one year trials at time of delivery. Toyota has a package called GoAnywhere that combines Drive Connect and Remote Connect for $15/month, so I bit the bullet and took that. It will kick in automatically once my trial expires. I may be in the minority, but I prefer using the on-board navigation and apps over Apple CarPlay, so it's worth it for me.

Toyota has a package called GoAnywhere that combines Drive Connect and Remote Connect for $15/month, so I bit the bullet and took that. It will kick in automatically once my trial expires.
I've received the same two week warning. But after going in circles on the app, I don't see a path to subscribe beyond my expiry date. Am I missing something obvious?

That said, I'm so tired of Toyota's GPS not retaining my north-up maps setting that maybe I just get cosy with phone GPS instead?

Software as a Service (Saas) took over the software market because it was a revenue stream, and because centralized software was easier and less expensive to maintain than thousands of local installations. If our vehicles had on-board nav you would have to pay to keep the maps up to date. Here you pay a subscription fee and your maps are always up to date. Remote start I agree with, that should be 100% on board.

Wife's just expired in August. Same thing other's have expressed here... She uses Android Auto exclusive - has since day one - so OEM nav has never been used, and won't be missed at all.

We're in TN and bought in Nashville. What really gets my goat is that the salesman never said anything about our state charging an additional tag fee for the hybrid registrations. It's conveniently waived the first year, but upon renewal on year two, rather than being the standard $65/yr, it's $165. They tack on a $100 "hybrid fee". When I question this at the tag office, the girl said, "well just be glad it's not fully electric - they pay an additional $200/yr".

This whole experience has me really regretting how sneaky these things have become. Whether it's making everything subscription based, or deliberately concealing the hybrid fees for the first year, It just feels sleazy.

I always thought if you want to encourage behavior, you subsidize the cost. If you want to discourage it, tack on fees. Well, for a car that gets 25MPG as hybrid, I'm buying more gas per mile (and therefore more gasoline taxes) than many ICE-only engines, so WTF do I have to pay to offset the hybrid's reduction in fuel use, when there's no reduction in fuel use... Sorry, getting off my soapbox.

Welcome @erkme73. That's really shady that they didn't tell you about the fees.
