I have been driving Toyota vehicles for 15 years now. 2 Tundra's, 1 Rav 4 and now a Grand Highlander. Toyota designs all their vehicles with a reserve so you will never run out of fuel. So if you have a 17 gallon tank and it shows empty at 13, there is nothing wrong with your system, its the way they designed it. I do not know the range designed in just they protect you from ever being stranded because you're out of fuel. An additional note I just learned. When you're fueling and the handle clicks off, stop fueling. You can seriously damage your vehicle by over fueling it. For more information, visit The Car Care Nut on youtube. He is a Master Technician for Toyota and he has a host of videos explaining all this. I recommend all videos relevant to the vehicle you are driving.

Hi @Toyota Fan welcome to the forum! How are you liking your Grand Highlander so far? Have you had any issues with it?
Me, my wife, son & daughter in Law, I have been driving Toyotas for over 25 years, from the Previa Van with captains chairs, Previa that went over 200,000 miles, A 2010 Highlander still running with 250,00 miles my son now drives, and two RAV 4's. I got my Hybrid Grand Highlander in September 2023 and it has approximately 25,000 miles. My wife and I are both professional engineers and both of us have over 40 years of experience. As for the 2024 Hybrid Grand Highlander, the vehicle has significantly more internal room than the 2010 Highlander, It also gets much better mileage 27 to 30 MPG vs 17 to 23 MPG. The vehicle handles well, has decent acceleration, is comfortable for both the front and rear passengers, and has a decent sound system.

However; I think the car was released "not ready for prime time". Most of the problems I experience appear to be in the computer programing and connectivity systems. I've had the vehicle into Toyota service five times for the inability to access more than 12 to 12.5 gallons in the 17+ gallon gas tank. Still no improvement. Android Auto needs an extensive update for Samsung phones, it's buggy and takes control over all other Bluetooth connections to my phone.
The vehicle has way too many warning noises, from beeps, dings, announcements, warnings, steering wheel vibrations and other tones going off, often for inappropriate or unknown reasons. This is not only distracting, but dangerous. I often have to take my eyes off the road to determine what each noise indicates, some times requiring me to touch the screen or a button on the steering wheel. It's not helpful, not desired, and in my opinion; dangerous by adding distractions requiring me to take my attention off driving. I've turned off most of the noises and vibrations, but I'm unable to turn off the constant unnecessary reminders, warnings and "required maintenance" pop-ups. It is frustrating and annoying, not something we've (yes, plural) previously experienced with Toyota Vehicles.
One other very concerning item that has occurred on three separate occasions, the 2024 Hybrid GH has totally shut down when stuck in traffic. This has only happened in situations where I have been stuck on an Interstate behind a significant accident where only a few cars are getting past at a time and traffic is stop and go, with very low speeds over miles.
All things considered, I should purchased a different Toyota model with a proven track record. It is still a good vehicle, but does not measure up to previous models. Too many bugs.

I talked with Dalton Toyota in San Diego and they said the following.

The fuel sending unit is too short leaving the bottom 3.5ga unmeasurable. Toyota is aware but no fix is in process.

FIX: 🤨
He suggests everyone go to their Toyota and at next service report so it’s on a work order. Then call the Toyota 800 national number and make a complaint- no against the dealership but against the no fix option. A dealership has to be aware for National’s paperwork.

If enough do this, Toyota will create a fix.

Interesting. I just left Toyota and they said the sending unit is too short and does not make a full dip after a bend in the tank. This is a known issue and there is no fix yet. However Toyota is aware but needs enough people to submit work orders for issue

Is there a way to find out how many people filed the same issue with Toyota ?

o_O Toyota ..my dealership is aware for the past 8 months or more now and they keep reaching out to Toyota… same thing each time
So much for Toyota ranking high in customer satisfaction surveys. I hope this is on the rare end of what they do. But then again, the surveys dealers give us to fill out sort of imply giving them 10/10.

Maybe C&D will light a fire under Toyota on this issue:

We pumped 16.498 gallons using our typical "three-click" method of three automatic shutoffs separated by a five count in between. But continuing to top off until we saw fuel in the filler neck got the tally to 17.402 gallons, slightly more than the stated capacity.

Yeah they had some interesting results when they were testing.

But that doesn’t entirely explain why we are regularly stopping to refuel at increments less than 300 miles, and we’ve never made it more than 400 miles on a tank. Toyota’s published specifications state that it has a 17.2-gallon fuel tank, but our regular fill-ups, even when running dangerously close to zero miles on the indicated trip computer, are in the high 13- to low 14-gallon range. It’s not just us, either, as we've seen plenty of similar discussions on owners' forums.

Yes, that is the most mpg you will get. The max is designed for power, not economy and only runs in hybrid mode when you are well under 20 mph or stopped and your battery is charged. I will try to find my other post which is much more complete and explains it all.
I have 2024 GH Hybrid Max Platinum - averaging 26mpg city and 28 mpg highway. Drive almost exclusively in Eco mode, rarely drive more than 5mph over speed limit, adhere strictly to maintenance schedule and recomm tire pressure.

My GH Hybrid is in for scheduled service and I mentioned the fuel issue again with the old TSB listed above and a log of all my fill ups.

They just texted me that they have a fix so I searched and found TSB T-SB-0060-25, released last week.

This sounds very promising!

I just had mine in for 10k service on Wednesday this week and asked for the T-SB-0060-25 fuel level software update. Filled up yesterday, and looking forward to seeing if I can finally put more than 12 gallons in.

Glad they finally put out a fix.

I have my Tsb Reflash Combination Meter scheduled for tomorrow morning at 9am , after 20 visits and 40K miles now ( 2024 hybrid max ) dealer stated they never tried that reflash after all these visits I had , hopefully tomorrow will be a positive outcome .

How many gallons was the refill?

Mine only had 22 miles dte when I dropped it off, I’m curios to see if it changes.

I was at 260 DTE when I dropped it off. Curiously I was at 255 DTE when I picked it up and the odometer was only 1 mile higher than when dropped off. I was expecting to see an increase in DTE when I picked it up, not a decrease. But all the vehicle trip history was reset and it was showing a lower average MPG so maybe that was part of it.

I was at 242 DTE when I filled up and it took 7.033 gallons.

I had the SW update done this past week, its reportedly time-consuming so left it for the day.

Now burning down fuel until we get the low-fuel warning, then will fill it up and see what happens.

Thanks for info, our GH Max to dealer 9/18 for 18 month service. Will request the SB. Had requested fix at 12 month, when I had LFW light come with max fill at 13.2 gal. When left tat 12 month service with LFW on for 50 miles. Dealer filled tank with 14.2 gal and said LFW was within acceptable limits!! Regards Pete H

Quick update for everyone just received the car back with the new updated software. The vehicle had 162 miles left to empty. And only took 5.8 gallons of gasoline. Right now I’m showing only 360 miles total on the tank. Maybe you have to drain the gasoline all the way out and refill?? doesn’t seem like this update works
